FILM SCREENINGS
THE SOUND OF MASKS
BY SARA GOUVEIA. 2018. FILM STILL
Arquivo Atlântico Film Screenings is a curatorial exercise that consists of a selection of films and videos that approach the legacies of colonialism in contemporary social, economic and political formations. The programs focus fundamentally on the global south and on artists who, through their work, challenge hegemonic historical narratives and propose a critical reading of the present.
As choreographers and researchers moving from our creative practice towards a curatorial proposition, we decided to focus on certain performativities and corporalities that emerge in specific contexts and evoke the way in which broader political issues are incorporated and manifested in everyday life. The films we selected point to some of the central issues of our work not only in their relationship with what colonization meant and how we can observe its traces and marks, but also in its connection with the question of memory itself and the way in which the present is made in a constant negotiation with the past.
Understanding these sessions as a form of collective study requires an attention to details: to the name of a church that appears in the background of a scene, to the flags of boats anchored in the port, to the lyrics of a song or to the way in which fragments of history are manifested in everyday gestures. The programs are an invitation to observe similarities, symmetries and the differences that emerge in the encounter between different contexts, allowing us to rethink our own realities, perspectives and positionalities.
AA Film Screenings has been supported by and presented at Hosek Contemporary, Mala Voadora, a.pass {advanced performance and scenography studies} and Pianofabriek.
